x² - 4x - 9 = 29

x² - 4x  = 38

x² - 4x  + (2)² = 38 + (2)²

(x - 2)² = 42

x - 2 = ±√42

x = √42 + 2 or x = -√42 + 2

x = 8.48 (nearest hundredth)  or -4.48 (nearest hundredth)
