What happened to the manufacturing and industry in the North during the Civil War?

During the Civil War, manufacturing and industry in the North were greatly boosted. In fact, that the North could count with weapons, clothing and other manufactures was decisive in the outcome of the war. The south, on the other hand, was specialized in farming, which were easily destructed by fire, and the had to depend on pillage to obtain weapons.
